Have you ever had to live in poverty? I have. It’s not fun to wonder how you’ll pay rent each month, to worry about putting food on the table, and to make difficult decisions about purchasing necessities for yourself. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope that nothing else goes wrong when your bank account continually hovers around 0 dollars each month. Of course, this is never the case. Just last year I had a huge catastrophe on my hands when my home’s old HVAC system finally quit once and for all. When I moved into this property, the HVAC system was well over 10 years old already. Still, I did some research and found out that the furnace and air conditioning unit were produced by a highly reputable company that produced high quality equipment with long lifespans. I cleaned up the old heating and cooling systems, and the temperature control equipment has worked great for several years now. To save a buck, I learned everything about the heating and cooling system and maintained it diligently on my own. Then things started to go wrong. I experienced terrible nights where the furnace didn’t turn on, rank smells that came out of the air vents, and a few thermostat failures. Finally the whole HVAC needed to be laid to rest, but there was no way I could afford to buy a brand new one! While talking to the HVAC specialist about my old system, he realized that I had accrued a lot of useful working knowledge. It wasn’t long before we had worked out a deal; in return for a significant discount on my home heating and cooling system, I would work for him as an HVAC technician. All that self-maintenance really paid off!
