Do you know kids who play Minecraft? The game is sheer genius! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a game that uses blocks to build worlds. In this game, players use the blocks to make everything from tiny villages to giant metropolitan cities. Different blocks make different things. My nephew, Andy, loves it and I think it’s pretty cool too. You have to use your problem solving skills and spatial abilities to be good at Minecraft. As an HVAC repair technician, I am pretty talented in that respect. I think that probably gives me an advantage when I play with my nephew, but he doesn’t seem to mind. We both love this game. A few months ago, while playing Minecraft with Andy, I had a great idea. I realized I could use the game pieces to build out models of HVAC systems. Every detail could be worked out right there on the table. That could save so much time by pre-planning HVAC installation jobs and help determine exactly what the client needed. I tried it out, and it worked like a charm. Now I’m starting my own HVAC installation business. I’m starting off as a small business, but I hope it will grow in time. I hired Andy to work for me part time, after school, building models with Minecraft blocks. I use his models to work out the necessary requirements for that particular building. This game has really been a “game changer” for Andy and me. Isn’t it funny how some little blocks can make such a big difference?
